Suicide attack in Iraqi Capital, Baghdad, as terrorist blew himself in a crowded bus heading for Nassiriya, killing at least 30 people and another 37 people are severely wounded, according to Kindi hospital.
All that remained of the bus was burnt metal, charred bodies and blood all around the explosion site, the major bus station for vehicles headed to the mostly Shiite areas of the south.
Remains of the bus have been splattered around the detonation sites, making the bus act like shrapnel inside a grenade. This same bus station was the place where, last August, three car bombs led to the death of 43 people and wounding of 89.
Police Lt. Ali Mitaab said the attacker left a car, boarded the bus and blew himself up as it was about to leave for Nasiriyah, 200 miles southeast of Baghdad. "[The conductor] tried to stop him but the man insisted. He sat in the middle of the bus and then the explosion took place."
A witness, who saw the tragedy declared: "I was standing near when the blast happened. I saw only seven or eight people wounded and all the remaining people inside the bus were killed."
The attack could possibly mark the fact that there is just a week left before the first Iraqi parliamentary elections, after the long reign of Saddam Hussein.
Iraq has suffered another tragedy on Dec 5, as two bombers killed at least 36 people at a police academy in Baghdad. Today saw other killings too, as three Iraqi soldiers died after a terrorist drive-by in Dur al-Sud quarter, west of Baghdad.
Police colonel Hussain Abd al-Wahid, lived through an assassination attempt in al-Bayaa district. Though wounded, al-Wahid's life is not in danger.
