Mortar Attack Kills Four In Baghdad

Insurgents fired mortar rounds upon a busy market in Baghdad, called Isterbadi; 4 dead, 12 injured

A mortar projectile hit crowded Baghdad market, leading to four deaths and over a dozen wounded, police officials announced.

The Isterbadi market was lit afire by the blast. The area, Baghdad's Kazimiyah district, was mostly populated Shiites. In its early history, Kazimiyah was a town of great Shia learning importance, perhaps the main center of Shiite learning, but over time the town declined.

Capt. Mohammed al-Waili said that the fire caused by the mortar attack was put out rapidly by Iraqian emergency personnel.

Iraq also holds the place in the spotlight after the death of an US soldier and the disappearing of two other marines in a clash between US forces in Iraq and insurgents; the attack of the insurgents took place in Youssifiyah, SW of Baghdad, on the night of Jun 16th.

Rebels fire a couple of mortar rounds then quickly take off before the attack can be retaliated.

The Iraqi insurgents often used to combine small weapons attacks with IEDs (Improvised Explosive Device), RPGs, mortars, and car bombs, many times in combinations, so that the surprise-effect was even greater.
