Multiple MotoGP World Champion, Valentino Rossi won the Catalonian Grand Prix after one of the most spectacular pile-ups in MotoGP racing.
"It's a great victory which puts me in a better position in the championship," said Rossi after the race.
Rossi's triumph came after a terrible accident happened just seconds after the first start.
Three riders were slightly injured after the two Ducati's of Spain's Sete Gibernau and Italian Loris Capirossi touched on the first bend in the middle of a group of 19 riders.
Capirossi's bike then hit that of Italy's Marco Melandri, who in turn made contact with three others bikes.
Melandri, Capirossi and Gibernau left the race and were immediately sent to Barcelona's main hospital.
"Considering what could have happened after such an accident, the riders got off lightly," said doctor Claudio Macciagodena.
Second place went to American Nicky Hayden, current number one in the overall standings. "All weekend I wasn't very good in practice as well as the warm-up. I knew that the race would be hard," said Hayden.
"After the accident I remained focused my job. When you get the green light you have to forget everything and go for it. I saw that Valentino was saving himself for the end. I don't think that I could have caught up with him," he added.
