Moreover, it is claimed that the medicine is responsible for several suicide cases.
Researchers have proved that the drug causes depression on mice and are hoping that Roaccutane will disappear from the pharmaceutical market; but before that happens, they need to prove that people present the same side-effects after taking Roaccutane.
For the moment it remains a secret how Roaccutane initiates the mechanism of depression, but scientists believe the drug is responsible for minimizing the number of new brain cells.
"Establishing a link between the active molecules within the drug and a change in depression-related behavior, albeit in mice, is an important step forward in our understanding of the effects of this drug," explained Sarah Bailey of the University of Bath.
"This laboratory evidence provides a useful model for future research into Roaccutane and understanding how this family of compounds affects the brain," she added.
Roaccutane has been prescribed by dermatologists for nearly 15 years. ROACCUTANE is used to treat acne; it belongs to a group of medicines called retinoids, which are similar to Vitamin A. The retinoids work by reducing the amount of the oily substance (ie sebum) made by glands in your skin, reducing bacteria, reducing inflammation and opening clogged pores. There are many different types of medicines used to treat acne. ROACCUTANE is used for more serious cases.
