Moss, who was described as a "fashion icon" by the British Fashion Awards judges, was not present at the ceremony, which took place early this week in London. The award was collected for her by designer Vivienne Westwood.
"Kate wasn't here unfortunately. She couldn't make it," a spokesperson for the British Fashion Council said. "There was a massive cheer and Westwood went up on stage to accept it on her behalf."
Earlier this year a drug scandal threatened to ruin Moss' career, after the Daily Mirror printed photographs which appeared to show her using cocaine.
However, Moss managed to come clear and reestablish herself as a "fashion icon." The model took some time off from work and checked into rehab for treatment, after several fashion companies ended their associations with her.
Soon after she completed the treatment, new contracts appeared for Moss. Now she is the main face in 14 advertising campaigns.
"Kate Moss is a fashion icon and without a doubt one of the most prolific models in the industry," a British Fashion Awards spokeswoman said; "She has now been modelling for over 15 years and remains at the top of her game."
