The search engine war started by Yahoo posting that it searches through 20 billion documents on its official blog just got a reply from Google. Back then, Google had little over 8 billion documents.
Even though everyone was expecting to come up with bigger figures than Yahoo, Google's response was different: they said the size doesn't matter - the relevance is what counts.
In order to prove their theory, Google says that "Popular queries return millions of results, but even the most obsessive searcher isn't about to surf a few million pages, or even a tiny fraction of them; in most of these cases, you'll either quickly find what you're looking for or refine your search to be more focused."
They suggest users can see for themselves by "searching for something very specific, or try a query that previously returned very few results". "For example, you could enter your name or hometown, along with your favorite color or animal".
According to Google's internal testing, their newly expanded search index is "more than three times larger than that of any other search engine".
